Ski Conditions, Openings, Closings and New Developments in Chinese Skiing
Wanlong New Gondola
WANLONG CLOSED FOR THE SEASON
Wanlong took advantage of early snowfalls to have a limited early November opening. The Wanlong website now contains a page that lists all lift and trail openings. This season Wanlong operated 6 lifts including the new Gondola and the top to bottom express lift.
The new Yuelong hotel (a lower price alternative) and the existing Shuanglong Hotel offered special pricing for China Ski Tours readers. Contact Bernie directly for information and to book for next year.
Wanlong has also entered the Chongli condo expansion with its own village now being sold in initial phases. With a slope side advantage, these are likely to sell quickly and become a serious advantage for Wanlong in the local real estate market.
Wanlong'sEnglish version web siteis back up so to get the 2018/2019 rates for skiing, rentals and the slope side hotel just click on the link and go to the pricing tab. You can also direct book lift tickets and rooms on the site now.

Yabuli Sun Mountain Lodge
Sun Mountain closed for the season
With early November snows allowing a good start and a renewed sense of purpose by management, Yabuli, a pioneer of the China ski resort industry is again a viable choice for a multi-day ski trip into the far north of China.
This marks the 8th season that the Sun Mountain Resort, part of Mountain China Resorts, was be operated byClub Med.The first winter ClubMed's all-inclusive package style was introduced to the China market, it restricted access to much of the hotel's facilities to ClubMed guests only. Apparently that was not as well received as expected as this winter they are also selling rooms seperately on CTRIP. So if you wanted to go there but were put off by the ClubMed package, you will be able to this year by just booking on line with CTRIP.com or through China Mountain Resorts own website www.yabuliski.com. However, if you are a ClubMed all-inclusive package fan, that is also still available by booking on the ClubMed reservations web site.
Mountain China Resorts continues to concentrate on general Yabuli development with a focus on vacation homes. MCR will also continue to operate the Sun Mountain Lodge on the top of the mountain and the older, recently refurbished Windmill Inn a short distance down the valley away from the slopes. These and other Yabuli resorts can be booked on-line through sites like CTRIP.com and ELONG.net. Note: Our report on Yabuli now covers 4 pages. Be sure to follow the links on the Yabuli landing page to the other resort specific pages. There is also a new joint marketing Yabuli Area website covering all the major operations in the valley. It is Chinese only but Google's translator function works well on it.
WANDA CHANGBAISHAN CLOSED FOR SKIING
The Wanda Resort has reached the end of the ski season and is gearing up for a big summer season. This season the number of hotel choices increased with both higher and lower end choices. Last season saw the opening of their Burton mini terrain park and their Sno Fun Park for kids of all ages. Check with us for potential great ski packages!
Thanks to early snows Beidahu opened in November. With the addition of more intermediate trails on the Gondola serviced mountain, including a new 3000m Primary top to bottom trail, Beidahu is now a better choice for a group with a mix of skiing skills.
For Shanghai based skiers, now that Spring Airlines offers cheap flights to Changchun from Shanghai the general air fares have come down making a weekend trip realistic with up on Friday night, ski 2 full days and return on Sunday night!
Also the new 5 star hotel at the base has begun full operations for those who want a little more luxury than the existing slope side hotel. Prices on the older rooms remained very reasonable for the budget conscious.
With the award of the 2022 Winter Olympics to Beijing/Zhangjiakou, ChongLi remains the epicenter of China's major ski resort boom. A few years ago it had the passive role as the town you drove through to get to Wanlong, then Duolemeidi and now Secret Garden. No more. A major building boom continues, albeit at a reduced pace, part of a long range plan to make ChongLi THE year round mountain retreat for Beijing/Tianjin. Previously, Yabuli in Heilongjiang held title to the only ski town in China with multiple resorts. Feuled by the award of the 2022 winter olympics, interest in the area remains high. Thus we felt that we should now cover ChongLi itself and track its development for our readers.
With Chongli's great snow conditions this winter, Duolemeidi should enjoy a season of good sliding. Although no significant expansion occurred since last season, the mountain contains enough terrain for advanced skiers to make this ski area at least a "day trip" candidate for those staying the larger ChongLi area resorts. (See our updated report on Duolemeidi)
Located between Doulemeidi and Genting Secret Garden is a set of valleys with Chongli's newest resort that opened this winter. Known now as the ChongLi Thaiwoo Four Seasons Resort, the intital plans to open a 450 m 8-10 slope phase one resort that should be on par with neigorboring Duolemeidi are part of a planned resort that would be at least on par with Wanlong if not bigger. Plans also include a golf course and target the year round leisure market that is just emerging in China.

Tian Shan Valley Scene
It appears that the much publicized Ping Tian resort in Xinjiang will still not be open for the 2014-2015 winter season. Although the management may still push forward with their plans to develop a world class alpine ski and golf resort in the high Tian Shan mountains, the combination of the global financial situation and permitting delays have kept the project on a slower than expected path.
